This morning in Okushiga, we woke up to crisp mountain air and one of those impossibly blue autumn skies that makes you want to spend the whole day outside.
The weather was simply too good to ignore, so we headed out to Ōnuma Pond to see how the autumn colors were coming along.

The leaves have officially started to turn, but only here and there. Overall, we’d say the foliage is still around 30% of its peak, with another week or two to go before the mountains really put on their famous autumn show.
That said, today’s combination of deep cobalt-blue water, crystal-clear skies, and quiet mountain scenery was absolutely unreal.
And yes… I couldn’t resist squeezing in another trail run.

While Onuma Pond is best known for its spectacular peak autumn colors, there’s something equally special about visiting just before the crowds arrive. The subtle hints of fall, the peaceful trails, and the stillness of the mountains make this time of year feel like a hidden secret.
The trail to Onuma Pond is about 4 km from the trailhead parking area (or the nearest bus stop), taking around an hour on foot.
If you’re a trail runner, though… you’ll probably get there in under 30 minutes.

Editor’s Note: This visit took place in September.
